Books nominated for the J. I. Staley prize are evaluated by the following criteria:

  • innovative and rigorous thinking in terms of theory, research methods, and/or application of findings;
  • superior integration of subdisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary perspectives;
  • significant contribution to our understanding of humankind;
  • exemplary writing and clarity of expression; and
  • demonstrated or anticipated impact on the field of anthropology.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the J. I. Staley Prize, a book must have been published at least two years before it is nominated. Any new nomination may remain eligible for eight years following the date of original publication. If a nominated book goes out of print during this period, it will be withdrawn from further consideration.

Co-authored books are eligible for the Prize, but edited volumes are not. Second or subsequent editions are not eligible for consideration.

For further information, call the J. I. Staley Prize coordinator at (505) 954-7201 or e-mail staley@sarsf.org .

After reviewing the nominations to ensure they are eligible for the award, the School convenes a panel of outside scholars representing a broad spectrum of the subdisciplines of anthropology.  Comprised of a different set of scholars each year, the panel evaluates nominated books based on the criteria for the Staley prize.

A nomination for the J. I. Staley Prize should be made in the form of a letter that addresses how the book fulfills the selection criteria listed above or expresses other qualities related to the intent of the Prize. Each nomination must be for a single book. The J. I. Staley Prize is awarded for one outstanding and influential publication, not in recognition of an author's life achievement.

Letters of nomination may be submitted at any time throughout the year and may be made by individuals or academic departments. Nominations must be received by October 1 to be considered for the next J. I. Staley Prize.

Authors and publishers may not nominate their own books.
