Program Description

The School sponsors two- to three-day seminars that provide scholars with the opportunity to explore critical topics on human culture, evolution, history, and creative expression. These short sessions enable participants to assess recent developments and chart new directions in the field as well as to plan additional conferences or symposia. In preparation for the seminar, participants will be asked to identify issues for discussion, propose directions for future research, or prepare a paper.

For all short seminars, lodging, meeting space, and meals are provided in the School's Seminar House for up to 10 participants, including the seminar chair(s). Limited travel support may be available for regular short seminars and should be requested in the application; the new research team seminars described below include travel support for up to 7 participants. Following each short seminar, the chair is required to submit a two- to three-page summary for use on the School's web site and annual report. Unless otherwise agreed, SAR Press will hold rights of first refusal to all potential publications from the Short Seminar program.

New Research Team Short Seminars

With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), SAR has established a new SAR research team short seminar program to advance collaborative and interdisciplinary research in anthropology. The program supports at least two short seminars each year for research teams that need focused time together to synthesize, analyze, and discuss the results of their work and to develop plans for successful completion of their projects. Eligible research projects will be those in which the central focus is on a question of anthropological importance; teams that are interdisciplinary and international in scope are especially encouraged to apply. Unlike regular short seminars, funding provided by NSF will allow SAR to reimburse up to 7 participants for travel and cover their food and lodging.

How to Apply

Any scholar wishing to organize a short seminar, including the new research team seminar, should send five copies of a proposal no more than six pages long, typed double-spaced, to the School at the address given below. The proposal should describe the purpose of the seminar, the topic to be addressed, its importance, and the proposed participants (no more than 10 total). The proposal must also describe the expected results of the seminar and articulate a plan for disseminating these results, such as an edited volume, a professional conference, or an article in a professional newsletter or journal. Seminar proposals must indicate what funds will be provided by the applicant to offset the costs of the seminar, including for participant travel (for research team seminars, NSF funding covers the cost of up to 7 participants). Also required is a copy of the applicants curriculum vitae, not to exceed four pages. Research team seminar applications also should include the original research design and/or funding proposal for the project.

Proposals will be accepted at any time but will be reviewed twice each year, with deadlines of September 1st and March 1st. Applicants will be notified of the School's decision within two months of the review. Short seminars are generally scheduled 9–12 months in advance.
