The Eric and Barbara Dobkin Native American Artist Fellowship is offered annually by the Indian Arts Research Center at the School for Advanced Research to encourage the work of Native American women artists. The mission of the Dobkin Fellowship is to support a female artist who desires to realize creative goals in growth, enhancement, excellence, and continued achievement. Broadly conceived, the fellowship encourages the distinctive, living artistic traditions of Southwestern Native people. Through the personal expression of her art, the recipient has an opportunity to share her experience and to foster a greater cultural understanding with all people. Using the School’s Native American art collection, she can learn more about her own community’s arts and become engaged in a project where the spirit of learning, discovery, and passion are transformed into the art she shares with the world. The award is offered in the winter to an individual who excels in the visual, verbal, or performing arts.

Philosophy of the Program

The Dobkin Fellowship seeks to assist the artist by providing encouragement, financial assistance, and time to study the IARC collection. The program is customized to the artist’s needs and goals. In interacting with the staff and other resident scholars at SAR, the recipient shares and exchanges ideas in an atmosphere of camaraderie. The Eric and Barbara Dobkin Native American Artist Fellowship provides opportunities that challenge the artist and creates a forum for others to see the world through the artist’s eyes. Additionally, this fellowship increases the quality of Native American arts, increases public awareness of individual artists, provides a significant economic benefit for the recipient, and creates a dialogue between the artist and SAR staff that enhances our understanding of the aesthetic and creative process.
The Eric and Barbara Dobkin Native American Artist Fellowship enables the Indian Arts Research Center to maintain its leadership position in supporting southwestern Native American women in the arts.
